Field seminar to examine Mesozoic strata, age equivalent to North Sea Hydrocarbon reservoirs

Objectives

The aims of this field seminar are to:

• examine the West of Britain Triassic - Jurassic sequences in Skye and Raasay

• examine reservoir, source and seal relationships in terms of their sequence stratigraphic context

• allow participants to develop their own sequence stratigraphic models, based upon their own field observations supplemented by group discussion and evening lectures.

• Geologists and geophysicists interested in the practical application of sequence stratigraphic methodology.

• Reservoir engineers who wish to gain a greater understanding of reservoir heterogeneity in relation to reservoir architecture.

Geology

The Mesozoic sequences on Skye and Raasay provide excellent outcrop analogues for subsurface source, seal and reservoir horizons present in the basins to the West of Britain. The Hebridean Basins are of particular interest as they lay at the western limit of the North Sea thermal doming 'event', responsible for the mid-Cimmerian unconformity(s); thus providing an insight into Jurassic sections often missing in the North Sea province.

Course Format

Participants are provided with a detailed field guide, which presents datasets and a geological background to the area. They are encouraged to make their own field observations, and to work in small groups in order to develop their own sequence stratigraphic model. Evening lectures and group discussions then lead to an overall sequence stratigraphic interpretation of the sections visited. This 'hands-on' approach has proved more effective than the more usual 'show and tell' format.

• Duration: 5 days

• Proposed dates: to be arranged.  Between April and October, dependent upon tides.

• Cost: By quotation, includes instruction and a detailed field manual which is fully illustrated in colour.

• Clothing: Participants should be equipped with stout walking boots and waterproofs
