Depositional Facies Modelling

Depositional Facies Modelling

A depositional facies model is crucial to understanding the nature and lateral extension of facies and reservoir properties away from known data points and is important during exploration and development phases.  Such a model integrates all available datasets from a variety of sources including:

  • Sedimentological core descriptions (Grain size, Sedimentary Structures, Lithology, Strat. Surfaces)

  • Ichnofacies interpretations

  • Bioclast types and associations

  • Petrographic information on the depositional information

  • Biostratigraphy data, particularly biofacies information

  • Image log facies and dips indicating transport direction

  • Seismic facies

  • Seismic attribute maps

  • Analogue models, particularly outcrop analogues

  • Variations in accommodation space based on a knowledge of the underlying structural controls

Depositional facies modelling can be performed as a standalone project, but more typically is part of a larger project such as the construction of GDE maps for play fairway analysis or for the generation of a static reservoir model.
